Treatment of temporomandibular joints

Do you suffer from cumbersome migraines that your General Practitioner is not able to explain? Do you “eat” your own teeth at night? Severe headaches and neck pains, teeth pain hypersensitivity, facial pain, mouth trembling and crackling sound during jaw movements – these are the most common symptoms of a malfunctioning temporomandibular joint. All this indicates that its high time to visit our specialist and launch the rehabilitation of the temporomandibular joint.

A common ailment occurring in patients is the so-called bruxism, which is excessive teeth grinding and jaw clenching due to increased muscle tension, impairments in the ability to chew as well as cervical spine and pectoral girdle disorders. It causes cumbersome headaches, shoulder pains as well as cervical spine and upper limb pains. Disregard and negligence of bruxism leads to abrasion of teeth and, as a future consequence, to the necessity to perform costly prosthetic replacements. The launch of the treatment at a relatively early period allows to maintain the natural shape of teeth and avoid the expensive treatment.

Specialists at Maestria Digital Dental and Face Clinic will advise you on how to resolve the problem of clenching and grinding your teeth, support you in ridding of the persistent headache as well as eliminate tensions in neck and shoulder areas.

Treatment of temporomandibular joints at Maestria

The background for treating dysfunctions of the temporomandibular joint consists of appropriate diagnostics. During the first visit, the doctor conducts an interview and performs manual examination of head and neck muscles along with temporomandibular joints and articular capsules. Furthermore, the doctor also evaluates the functions of tongue as well as dentition and determines whether upper and lower teeth approach each other appropriately (occlusion). He establishes the causes of headaches, facial and back pains as well as diagnoses the crackling sounds in temporomandibular joints.

After the initial diagnostics, the doctor shall be able to decide whether it is necessary to conduct additional examinations such as, for example, tomography of temporomandibular joints.

Based on information obtained from the interview and the examination results, the doctor will thoroughly diagnose and propose treatment of temporomandibular joints such as, for example, head and neck muscle relaxing apparatus, which is fit onto the teeth before falling asleep – the so-called splint therapy (relaxing splint) – and rehabilitation of temporomandibular joints.

The doctor might also propose physiotherapy with an aim to relax joints and increase flexibility of muscles along with learning how to perform exercises by oneself. It often happens that a doctor sends the patient for treatment from an orthodontist or prosthetist due to the fact that treatment of temporomandibular joints if often linked with orthodontic and prosthetic treatments (for example occlusion alignment).
